Creative play day

What a busy afternoon we had, using our imaginations and working together with others.

The girls got free rein with the cars and tracks. They had to come inside as it was too windy outside on the step. The track kept on blowing away!
The boys got busy and cooked 'dinner' for Mrs Graham. Mmmmm delicious. They also did a fantastic job of cleaning up at the end.

We also spent some time finishing off your CVC robots. What a great variety we ended up with. Look at those proud smiles.

Trip to Carter observatory & Te Papa

We had a great trip yesterday. The morning was spent at Carter observatory where we watched a movie on the amazing dome screen. The movie was all about day and night, and seasons.

After that we were with Troy in the classroom. He showed us how big the planets are compared to the sun, and how far away each planet is.

Lastly we got to explore the rest of the observatory.

Luckily the sun came out and we could eat our lunch outside at Te Papa, and have a bit of a run around.

After that we went with our helpers to explore different parts of Te Papa. We were all worn out and some children even fell asleep on the ride back to school.

Thank you to all the helpers that came with us on the trip with us. You were a fantastic support.

We are currently in a construction zone!!

Our latest 'Creation Station' project is a big one - creating robots to help us with learning to read and write cvc words (e.g. m - o - p = mop).

Like all our projects we had to plan our ideas first and make a list of the things we thought we would need.

The first job was to select the boxes for our bodies and heads. Mrs Graham, Angela and Debbie helped us to wrap them in tinfoil.

Next we chose all the bits and pieces to use on our robots. We have all sorts of things we can use for eyes, mouths, noses and arms.

Our next job is to glue on all of these parts. Eliza, Ashley and Mia have made a start. They had to be careful because the glue gets hot.

Sunshine and shadows

It has been so nice to have some sunshine and to be able to get out and play with shadows. On Wednesday Mrs Graham had to stand really still as the children drew around her shadow.  We looked at how her shadow changed at different times of the day. In the morning it was long and stretched out towards the classroom. Later in the day her shadow was shorter, and stretched in a different direction. When we looked in the sky it appeared as if the sun had moved. Could this be is what made the shadow change place? We need to do some more investigation. Let's hope we have lots more sunny days!

We have been having lots of fun exploring the new maths boxes Mrs graham made up. These boxes have activities that let us explore number sense in different ways. We are leaning to count in different ways, to make groups and to know patterns in numbers.
